The Final Unsolved Mystery of Baldi’s Basics
Main summary
Key takeaways
Story and Gameplay
Baldi’s Basics initially resembles a cheap, old-fashioned educational game. It turns unsettling after the player collects a notebook and encounters an impossible third math problem. Baldi becomes hostile, and the goal shifts to collecting seven notebooks, finding the exits, avoiding Baldi and other characters, and using items to survive.
The game offers Classic, Party, and Demo modes. Completing them unlocks challenge settings; beating Classic with the first three settings active unlocks NULL mode.
NULL Mode and Hidden Clues
At first, NULL mode contains only a broken Think Pad and the message “Stop Looking For Me.” More clues appear by finding NULL in the other modes:
- Classic: Answering every question incorrectly speeds Baldi up. Escaping reveals NULL in Baldi’s office, warning the player to stop playing and destroy the game.
- Party: The player can leave the normal play area and find corrupted Baldis. The standard ending shows the message “Congratulations! This is all your fault.” A rare vending-machine item, the Dangerous Teleporter, can lead to another encounter with NULL, who repeats his warning.
- Demo: Completing extra questions and using a Portal Poster reveals hidden areas, including NULL’s enormous basement. It contains a waterway, switches, and a conspiracy board asking “Where is 99?” NULL confronts the player there, says he is tired of people searching for lore, and threatens to close the game.
Returning to NULL mode reveals a more dangerous pursuit. NULL can cause severe glitches and crashes, and eventually blocks the final exit. The player must throw objects at him; landing ten hits in a row ends the chase and opens a door marked 99.
Behind the door is a developer’s note. Micah McGonigal explains that it is a fourth-wall-breaking thank-you, not evidence that the developer is part of the game’s story. He says the larger story is intended to begin with version 1.0. NULL reacts angrily to the note and insists the player take the game’s warnings seriously.
Afterward, NULL mode becomes Glitch mode, a similar challenge in which corrupted Baldi pursues the player. The developer appears at the end, and a code in a closet unlocks debug features such as invincibility.
Rare Events and Unresolved Mysteries
A rare Classic-mode event may show a critical-error screen, followed by a distorted image of a person in red beside a lake. NULL then appears and disappears from the game. The scene can occur only once per game, and its effects may vary.
A further rare appearance, called Placeface, was removed. Slippy Slides managed to trigger it in a modified, non-Steam version.
The identity of the figure by the lake, the meaning of the image, and whether Placeface is random or has a specific trigger remain unresolved. The video concludes that further answers may have to wait for the game’s 1.0 release.
