Summary

In Sambakgol, Seo Ik (a famous penny-pincher) is so stingy that when a ragged traveler asks for something as simple as water, Seo Ik scoffs and drives him away, convinced the traveler is entitled to nothing.

Unbeknownst to Seo Ik, his daughter Hong-i secretly helps the traveler by slipping a handful of millet into the traveler’s sleeve. The traveler then proposes a contest: on the night of the first full moon of the lunar year, Seo Ik and the traveler will each try to “fill the granary” overnight—and whoever loses must give up the entire granary.

Seo Ik laughs at the challenge, certain nobody in the area can outdo him. But instead of truly filling the granary with real grain, he tries to cheat, deceiving people into buying rice sacks filled with chaff—essentially “winning” through fraud.

On the first full moon, the traveler returns outside the mountains and reveals his secret identity to Seo Ik’s household. He calls out Seo Ik’s wrongdoing, explaining that he witnessed everything, including Seo Ik’s harsh actions in the marketplace and his theft of grain from fruit trees. At that moment, a pale blue glow begins to seep from Seo Ik’s storehouse, exposing the deception.

The story ends by contrasting the chaff-filled “granary” and the judgment Seo Ik receives with the true grain situation.
