First Year Using Department-Operated, Certified Drones

The report notes this was the first year Sacramento Fire used its own drones and certified operators. Officials said the drones produced high-quality evidence and helped map the exact addresses linked to illegal launches.

July 4 Citations and Fines

On July 4 alone, the department issued about 70 citations, totaling roughly $300,000. This included at least one major case with a $100,000 fine tied to the footage.

Deterrence Efforts and Fire Impact

While Sacramento Fire acknowledged drones won’t completely stop illegal fireworks, the department emphasized deterrence through “hefty fines,” aiming to discourage offenders financially and reduce the risk of fires.

The department also reported that, during the holiday, there were multiple roadside and grass fires, but no major structure fires caused by illegal fireworks.

Plans to Expand the Program

Sacramento Fire plans to expand the program by adding two more drones before next year. The department described the technology as an additional tool for improving situational awareness and enabling more effective deployment of resources.
