Overview

After the death of King Solomon, the video narrates how Israel split into a divided kingdom. Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, is chosen as king in Shechem, while Jeroboam—prophesied to rule the ten tribes—returns from elsewhere to be positioned for leadership.

When the Israelites ask Rehoboam to ease their burdens, Rehoboam delays and seeks counsel. The elders advise a conciliatory approach, but Rehoboam instead follows the advice of the younger men, who recommend escalating oppression. On the third day, Jeroboam and Israel effectively support Rehoboam’s harsher response—leading to mass rejection, anger, and separation from the Davidic line.

Military and Religious Resistance to Reunification

The account then shifts to military and religious resistance to reunification. Rehoboam raises a large army (180,000) from Judah and Benjamin, intending to fight Israel and force unity. However, a “man of God” delivers a divine warning: Judah and Benjamin should not attack their Israelite brothers. The confrontation is avoided.

Jeroboam establishes his own kingship, rebuilding cities in Israel’s territory. Meanwhile, Rehoboam fears that people who go to Jerusalem for sacrifices will turn against him.

Idolatry and the Priesthood Split

To prevent Israelites from worshiping in Jerusalem, Rehoboam is portrayed as enabling idolatry: he creates two altars with golden calves and encourages worship outside Jerusalem. This leads to expelling the rightful priestly line (Levites) and appointing substitute priests, further deepening religious division.

Prophetic Confrontations

A prophetic confrontation follows when a man of God denounces the altar and predicts that Josiah will later destroy it, and that the altar will be torn apart with its ashes spilled out.

Jeroboam attempts to seize the prophet, but his arm is paralyzed—then later healed through prayer. The prophet refuses hospitality, adhering to divine instructions to travel by a different route.

The Deception and the Prophet’s Death

The video then describes how an “old prophet” deceives the man of God into disobeying God’s command, claiming angelic instruction to the contrary. The man of God eats and drinks anyway, and is rebuked through prophetic warning. He dies after being attacked or confronted on the road, yet the lion does not devour him.

The lion’s behavior (presented like a bodyguard) and the donkey’s survival are shown as signs. The old prophet mourns, retrieves the body, and buries it, concluding with a reflection on division: “this is the story of when it was divided.”
