The myth of Thor's journey to the land of giants - Scott A. Mellor

Summary

Thor, Odin’s son and protector of mankind, sets out on a journey to Jotunheim with his human servant Thjalfi and Loki, the trickster god. Along the way, they’re joined by a giant named Skrymir, who offers to carry their provisions in his own bag—until Skrymir dozes off and Thor can’t untie it.

Hungry and furious, Thor tries to wake the giant by striking Skrymir’s head with his hammer Mjolnir three times. Each time Skrymir assumes Thor is just hitting a falling acorn, shrugs it off, and keeps sleeping. The group continues only when Skrymir leaves them behind.

The Challenge at Utgard

They eventually reach Utgard, a massive giant fortress, and meet its king, Utgard-Loki. He challenges them to prove they’re the best at specific skills.

• Loki goes first, claiming he’s the fastest eater. He’s pitted against Logi, who turns out to be wildfire—Loki can eat quickly, but Logi consumes everything, including bones and even the trough. Loki loses in an especially humiliating way: he “ate fast,” but his opponent ate everything.

• Thjalfi then brags he can outrun anything in the wild. Utgard-Loki sends in Hugi, an ethereal competitor who proves to be the embodiment of thought—always faster than action. Thjalfi nearly catches up on a rematch, but still can’t beat thought, even when he runs as if his life depends on it.

• Thor receives the final challenge. Utgard-Loki offers him a drinking horn, claiming his men can drain it in two gulps. Thor repeatedly drinks, but the mead level barely drops—because the horn is filled with the ocean, and Thor’s “drinking” creates tides.

The next task is lifting the king’s pet cat—except the “cat” is enormous and behaves like a serpent-like force. It resists Thor’s strength until he can only lift a single paw. Furious, Thor demands a wrestling match. Utgard-Loki summons Elli, an “old nursemaid.” Elli defeats Thor not through brute strength, but through the inevitable weakness of age; Thor eventually has to kneel.

The Reveal

Just as the travelers prepare to leave disappointed, Utgard-Loki reveals the truth: every challenge was an illusion.

• Loki lost because his opponent wasn’t “another eater,” but wildfire (Logi).
• Thjalfi couldn’t win because thought is faster than running (Hugi).
• Thor couldn’t overcome Elli, since age weakens everyone.

Even the objects and creatures weren’t what they seemed: the horn was the ocean (Thor’s effort affected the world’s tides), and the cat was a serpent encircling the world (Thor’s struggle affected Earth itself).

As for Skrymir, he was actually Utgard-Loki in disguise—redirecting Thor’s hammer strikes into valleys across the mountains.

Outcome

Utgard-Loki congratulates them, and their terrifying capabilities convince him to keep them out of his land. Though they fail the tests, their attempts to achieve impossible feats end up changing the world in unexpected ways.
