Setup and configuration

1. Download and open Winbox on a laptop.
2. Connect the modem or other internet source to ether1. Connect the laptop to ether2 for initial configuration, then power on the router.
3. Log in to the new router in Winbox with the default admin account and a blank password. Create a password when prompted.
4. Rename interfaces for clarity. The presenter labels ether1 as the internet/WAN connection and names the LAN ports for their intended uses.
5. Add Google DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
6. Add a DHCP client on ether1 so the router can obtain an address from the modem.
7. Configure a srcnat firewall rule using masquerade on the internet-facing interface so LAN traffic can reach the internet.
8. Assign example IP subnets to the LAN ports:
   • ether2: 10.10.10.1/24
   • ether3: 20.20.20.1/24
   • ether4: 30.30.30.1/24
   • ether5: 40.40.40.1/24
9. Use the DHCP Server setup wizard to create DHCP service for the LAN interfaces, allowing connected devices to receive IP addresses automatically. Ether1 is reserved for the internet source.
10. Change the default login credentials, or add a separate user account with an appropriate permission group.

Testing

The presenter checks the router’s internet connection in Winbox’s terminal, then tests access by opening YouTube. The laptop’s assigned address is also checked with Windows ipconfig. By moving the laptop between LAN ports, the presenter demonstrates that each port assigns an address from its corresponding subnet and provides internet access.
