Summary

Peter Parker has spent four lonely years as Spider-Man since Doctor Strange’s spell made the world forget him—including MJ and his best friend, Ned. He keeps his distance from them for their safety while pushing through worsening pain and fighting New York’s criminals. During a chaotic attempt to stop a hijacked tank, he encounters a mysterious mind-controlling figure who can jump from person to person—but can’t take over Peter.

The investigation draws Peter into an uneasy alliance with Yelena, who is looking into attacks on Damage Control facilities, and the agency’s director, Bill. The entity is searching for something called “V-Max,” though nobody seems to know what it is.

Peter also awkwardly sneaks into Ned’s housewarming party, pretending to be an old college acquaintance. Ned reveals that he has built an app to track Spider-Man, while Peter quietly watches MJ move on with someone else.

As Peter’s pain worsens, his body begins to change. He develops organic web-shooting and heightened senses, but also experiences violent surges of power that leave his eyes black. He tries to control the mutation with an inhibitor device and even asks Bruce Banner for advice. The device works—until it overheats.

Peter discovers that the mind controller is Jean, a young telepath searching for her sister, Sarah. Jean briefly possesses MJ and uses Peter’s feelings for her to get close. Peter manages to save MJ and takes her to Frank Castle’s heavily trapped hideout.

The Revelation and Resolution

Peter learns that Damage Control has been experimenting on Sarah. Jean’s attacks were driven by a desperate effort to find her sister, not simple cruelty. When the agency tries to harness Jean’s powers, she unleashes a massive blast that freezes people across a wide area and takes control of the facility’s forces.

Peter removes his inhibitor and fights at full strength. But instead of simply attacking Jean, he lets her into his mind and shares his grief and loneliness, helping her understand that they don’t have to face loss alone.

Frank fires at Jean, and Peter takes the bullet meant for her, leaving him gravely wounded. He survives, with Jean secretly using her powers to help protect him as he recovers. Frank apologizes and helps stage a clever hospital exit: he puts on Spider-Man’s mask and waves to the cheering crowd while Peter slips away in plain clothes.

In the aftermath, Peter visits Aunt May’s grave and decides to stop hiding from everyone. He introduces himself to Ned—and Ned unexpectedly remembers their special handshake, restoring his memories of Peter and Spider-Man. Then Ned’s Spider-Man detector picks up another Spider-Man somewhere in space, setting up a new mystery.
