Act 4: Courtroom showdown in Venice

Act 4 opens with a full-blown courtroom confrontation in Venice. The Duke is furious and calls Shylock an “inhuman wretch.” Shylock, however, insists on his legal right to claim his pound of Antonio’s flesh.

Antonio has essentially surrendered—he even sharpens a knife—while everyone waits for the law to proceed properly.

Portia’s arrival and strategy

Just as hope feels completely gone, Portia arrives in disguise as a male lawyer, with Nerissa disguised as his assistant.

The video emphasizes how much smarter and more strategic Portia is than the men in the courtroom. She quickly maneuvers toward mercy, offering to settle the debt for double the amount. Shylock refuses, because he wants the flesh, not the money.

The legal trap: no blood allowed

Portia then tightens the case with a clever condition: Shylock can take the pound of flesh only if he does not spill any blood.

Because Venetian law won’t allow a foreigner to spill Christian blood—and because Shylock is treated as an outsider—this condition makes Shylock’s original plan impossible. Shylock attempts to pivot, but Portia continues pressing him into a corner.

The harsher twist: forfeiture and forced conversion

Portia introduces another legal angle: if a foreigner attempts to murder a citizen, they forfeit their possessions—half to the victim and half to the state. The Duke agrees to limit the state’s claim, which grants Antonio mercy.

Shylock is still punished brutally. Antonio redirects what remains to Lorenzo and Jessica—and the outcome grows even harsher for Shylock: he loses everything and must convert to Christianity, relinquishing his Jewish identity.

Comedy running alongside the tragedy
