Overview

In a remote Riau village, Pak Miskin and his wife, Mak Miskin, live in extreme poverty. Their home is made of rickety huts, their clothes are tattered, and they often even fall into debt just to get a handful of rice. Pak Miskin feels constant frustration and jealousy toward people who live comfortably, even though Mak Miskin advises patience and prayer.

The Dream and the “Chance”

One night, Pak Miskin dreams of an elderly, wise old man with a white beard. The old man offers him a “chance”:

• In the morning, travel by boat.
• Follow the Sepunjung River to look for a spring.

Pak Miskin wakes confused but decides to try anyway.

The Gold Beneath the River

At the river, Pak Miskin notices ripples and water activity that suggest something is beneath the surface. Just as he begins to doubt, something appears beside his boat—exactly like the rope from his dream.

He pulls it eagerly and finds a sparkling chain of pure gold tied at the end. His excitement quickly turns into greed. He hauls more and more gold into his small boat, ignoring signs that something is wrong.

The Warning He Ignores

A bird chirps from the trees, clearly signaling that Pak Miskin should:

• cut the rope, and
• take only what’s needed.

But Pak Miskin dismisses the warning as ordinary.

As the chain grows heavier, the boat starts to sink, then capsizes. Pak Miskin falls into the river while still clutching the gold chain. The chain drags him underwater, and he barely escapes only after untangling it.

Empty-Handed Regret

The treasure—now unreachable—sinks to the bottom. With regret and tears, Pak Miskin returns home empty-handed.

He realizes that his fate could have been different if he had followed:

• the old man’s message in the dream, and
• the bird’s warning.

Moral Lesson

God provides sustenance, and opportunities should be used wisely. Greed and taking more than necessary only bring disaster and steal the happiness right in front of you.
