Recap
In 1999, cheerful high-schooler Na Bo-ra promises her best friend Yeon-du—who is going to the United States for heart surgery—that she’ll find out everything about Yeon-du’s crush, Baek Hyun-jin. Bo-ra turns into a determined teenage detective: she follows Hyun-jin, learns his height and favorite drink, and tries to get his phone number. Her schemes lead to plenty of awkward moments, including hiding under a bed and pretending to be a survey caller, only to have her cover blown by Hyun-jin’s friend, Poong Woon-ho.
Bo-ra’s efforts also bring her closer to Woon-ho. She joins the school broadcasting club, gets into trouble over an adult movie cassette she borrowed for him, and even uses her taekwondo skills to protect Hyun-jin from bullies. But as she and Woon-ho spend more time together, her concern for Hyun-jin gradually gives way to real feelings for Woon-ho. One especially revealing moment comes during a school trip: after Bo-ra gets drunk and knocks on the wrong dorm-room door, Woon-ho hides her from the supervisor—and realizes how much he likes her.
The romance takes a painful turn when Yeon-du returns from surgery. Bo-ra discovers that the boy Yeon-du had seen at her mother’s shop was actually Woon-ho, wearing Hyun-jin’s uniform. Realizing her best friend loves the same person, Bo-ra hides her own feelings and deletes the confession email she’d sent Yeon-du. She even tells Woon-ho she doesn’t love him. Woon-ho, hurt, throws away the letter he had written to her.
Eventually, Yeon-du discovers Bo-ra’s deleted message and understands the sacrifice her friend has made. She helps bring Bo-ra and Woon-ho together before he leaves for New Zealand. They confess their feelings and promise to stay in touch, but as the years pass, Bo-ra loses contact with him.
The story returns to the present, where an invitation to an art exhibition leads Bo-ra to Woon-ho’s younger brother, Joseph. He reveals the heartbreaking truth: Woon-ho died in 2001. The exhibition honors him, and an old cassette—originally borrowed from Bo-ra, with Woon-ho’s own video recordings on it—shows how deeply he loved her. In the footage, Woon-ho promises he’ll come back, a promise he never gets to keep. Bo-ra watches the recordings with a smile that turns to quiet grief.
Personalities featured: Na Bo-ra, Yeon-du, Poong Woon-ho, Baek Hyun-jin, and Joseph.
