This Party Ended WAY Worse Than Expected

Overview

Austin (the narrator, “Luna”) agrees to attend a last-minute birthday party while living in a new house with basically nothing planned. He Uber-runs to buy a gift for the host, Dakota, and expects a fun night—especially after complimenting the nice “beach house” vibe.

What begins as a normal party rapidly devolves into chaos when Dakota drinks too much.

The party spirals out of control

As the night progresses, Dakota becomes increasingly sloppy and dangerous:

• Dancing on tables
• Smashing a glass
• Escalating behavior despite Austin repeatedly asking him to chill
• People eventually start leaving due to how embarrassing and disgusting things become (including puking on people)

Dakota then pushes things further by moving the party outside with a loud Bluetooth speaker and a bonfire, disregarding neighbors nearby and the boundary they’re clearly crossing.

Neighbor vs. party — cops are threatened

A neighbor confronts Dakota and warns she’ll call the police. Dakota mocks the threat and effectively dares her to do it.

Austin tries to intervene and shut things down, but Dakota insists it won’t matter—claiming cops won’t be a big deal and even suggesting he can “talk to cops.”

Austin later spots a cop car and realizes Dakota is gone—then finds him on the roof, waving an American flag and chanting “Happy birthday to me” as officers arrive.

The cops arrive, but it turns worse anyway

At first, the police response seems surprisingly reasonable and friendly. They ask Dakota to come down safely because he’s drunk.

But Dakota refuses repeatedly, saying things like “fuck the police,” and moves closer and closer to the edge while guests watch in stunned silence.

Then:

Dakota loses balance and falls off the roof, landing on one officer and knocking him unconscious.

Aftermath: the “worst case” flips into a lucky escape

Dakota is handcuffed, and paramedics are called for both Dakota and the injured officer.

Surprisingly, the officer wakes quickly. Later, Austin is told Dakota won’t go to jail—he’s headed to the hospital.

The officer is also unexpectedly compassionate, telling Austin he wouldn’t want to “ruin a kid’s life.” Austin is shocked by how calm/zen the officer is given the severity of what just happened.

Austin rides with the cops to the hospital and stays with Dakota overnight. After sobering up, Dakota admits he got too out of control.

In the long run, Dakota cuts down significantly—taking months off drinking (about six months)—and then returns more moderately.
