Summary

The narrator’s favorite teacher, Ray, is warm and supportive. He stays after school to help students catch up while the rest of the class works nearby. But the next day, he abruptly insists everyone call him “Mr. Blevins” and begins acting cold. He even shuts the door on a student who has relied on spending lunch in his office, leaving the narrator wondering what could have changed him overnight.

At lunch, Rebecca reveals the reason: she has been recording Ray and editing the clips to make it sound as though he threatened her. She used the fake evidence to blackmail him into giving her top marks, threatening to go to the police. The narrator realizes Ray’s harshness was an attempt to protect himself and his job, then rushes to tell the principal.

The next day, Rebecca is absent, and Ray writes his name on the board as “Ray” again—a hopeful sign that he can return to being himself.
