Emergency Landing of Garuda Flight GA421

Captain Rozak recounts the emergency landing of Garuda flight GA421 on January 15, 2002. The flight was traveling from Mataram toward Yogyakarta amid widespread severe weather.

At about 17,000 feet, the aircraft encountered powerful turbulence and storm clouds. Both engines suddenly flamed out. The pilots followed the emergency checklist and tried to restart them, but the engines and electrical systems remained out, leaving the aircraft gliding without power.

With communications and many instruments unavailable, Rozak had to choose a place to land. He ruled out nearby fields because their condition was uncertain, then steered toward a river. Bridges and a sharp bend complicated the approach, but the aircraft touched down in the river and came to a stop in a shallow section.

The landing saved the passengers, though one cabin crew member was killed after being thrown from the aircraft. The copilot suffered a facial injury, and some passengers were shaken or briefly unconscious. Local residents helped evacuate and care for the survivors. Rozak also recalls that some people took passengers’ belongings and aircraft equipment.

Rozak describes the survival as almost impossible given the aircraft’s weight and the loss of both engines. He later received psychological care and simulator training before returning to flying. The incident left him traumatized, but he continued flying until retiring in 2016.

Safety Advice

Rozak advises passengers to pay attention to cabin-crew briefings, know where the emergency exits are, and follow instructions during an evacuation. Life vests should be inflated only after leaving the aircraft.
